Located within the Australian Capital Territory, Calvary Public Hospital Bruce Emergency Department (ED) sees the full spectrum of patient presentations from newborn to the elderly as well as primary care and trauma. Calvary's well regarded Emergency Department sees in excess of 58,000 patients a year. Calvary Health Care - Bruce provides services in mental health, cardiology, general surgery, urology, general medicine (with all the major subspecialties represented) and O&G.

Nursing staff are supported through a specialised induction program which leads into a transitional program, where post graduate emergency nursing study is encouraged. The Emergency Department encourages continuing professional development with a nursing career structure to guide and support the provision of quality care.

About the Role 

The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is to provide advanced nursing care within a defined scope of practice in both acute and primary care areas of the Emergency Department. The APN will also provide a high level of support to the triage nurse in times of peak demand, clinical support to other nursing team members as required, and provide formal and informal education to other staff members as required.


What you bring

Advanced practise nurses provide advanced nursing care within a defined scope of practice in both the acute and primary care areas of the Emergency Department. Skills required but not limited to, are:

  • Extensive demonstrated competence in providing direct patient care (for patients of varying complexity) utilising the nursing process, and incorporating a risk assessment approach while working within professional legislation and existing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to undertake shift work on a rotating roster.
  • Evidence of involvement in research, education and professional body representation.
  • Significant experience in an advanced nursing role within a critical care area.
