About the role

The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role within a service. The role includes

  • Focused assessement and management of patients using advanced knowledge and skills which may include but not limited to ordering diagnostic investigations, prescribing medicines and direct referrals to other health pratitioners.
  • Is grounded in the nursing professions values, knowledge, theories and practice and provides innovative and flexible health care that compliments other health providers.The scope of practice is determined by the context within which the Nurse Practitioner is authorized to practice.
  • Provides leadership that facilitates the ongoing development of clinical practice utilizing research in the provision and development of educational programs, clinical services planning and development of clinical practice standards.
  • Is regarded as a senior nursing clinician and resource person for the service and works closely with clinicians and managment in the provision of care.
  • Manages and cares for patients, families and significant others through utilising models of care that are appropriate, timely and of a high quality which are governed by authorised guidleines/policies.
  • The primary purpose of the role is acting in a clinical leadership and consultancy role for Calvary Health Care Kogarah at The Sutherland Hospital in assessing and advising, coordinating, planning, directing and evaluating the care of palliative care patients. The role will will also advocate for the service and foster excellence in palliative care at The Sutherland Hospital.

Selection Criteria Essential: Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia including endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or working towards same as per the NMBA Guidelines on endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner
Essential: Post graduate qualifications at Masters level, in a NMBA approved program of study or relevant clinical specialty, or working towards same
Essential: Demonstrated ability to think critically, problem solve and make timely and sound clinical nursing decisions whilst working autonomously and understanding the application of evidenced based practice and outcome focused care
Essential: Demonstrated understanding of the palliative care delivery system and ability to lead and implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidence based research and ability to undertake clinical service planning
Essential: Demonstrated understanding of community based palliative care and the ability to lead and implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidenced based research
Essential: Current class C or above drivers licence with demonstrated recent driving experience
Essential: Superior skills in managing key stakeholders to achieve strategic and operational objectives for the service.
Essential: Ability to work within the Mission and Values of Calvary Health Care Kogarah
